Thirteen Ways I Avoid Edits

Thirteen Ways I Avoid Edits

1…. Call Dayna Hart
She's my favorite author friend that gives me encouragement and keeps me at the writing gig. The thing is that she doesn't even know that I'd rather be on the phone with her than taking care of edits. LOL.

2. Blog Rolling
Oh look Jennifer Colgan has a vampire kit! Cool, there's a new ad on I Can't Believe He's Still Single! And my all time favorite, checking out Deadliet Reports for all things "Deadliest Catch" related.

3. MySpace
Now, this is an excellent tool for marketing......unless you're like me and start visiting your favorite bands and checking out the new bands that are THEIR friends and so on and so on. I can waste more time there than anywhere.

4. Romance Divas
This is a free forum for readers and writers of romance. It would be fine if I just visited it to post my goals and get writing info, but let's face it, when I want to procrastinate, this site offers a million ways to do it.

5. Amazon.com
I could link you but I'm trying to spare you. If there's something you're looking for--a book with an obscure author or music that no one else has heard about--chances are you can find it on Amazon. Must. Avoid. Shopping.

6. Istock.com
I've frequently justified this black hole of procrastination with looking for "inspiration". LOL. The truth is that it's FUN to look for pictures for my website, covers or whatever.

7. Smoking
This is one of those things that I find myself doing MORE when I'm in edits. I'm "taking a break". *rolls eyes*. What I'm really doing is dealing with my nerves.....by exacerbating them with nicotine. Don't ask. I don't understand it either.

8. New Stories
New and shiny is soooooo much more appealing than the manuscript that has comments all over to the point to where I wonder why the hell they bought it in the first place. Besides, I'm still working, right? Right? Anyone?

9. Eating
Let's face it, I need brain food. But when the "meal" I make is so elaborate that it takes me 30 minutes to prepare? I'm avoiding. And telling myself I can't "eat and type at the same time" is another way I avoid doing my job. Because if I'm really inspired, I CAN eat and type at the same time.

10. Coming up with Thursday Thirteens
And of course I have to get them down and ready to go or I'll forget them. If I'm REALLY avoiding edits, I'll come up with TT for everyone else too. LOL.

11. Chatting
Ah, the joys of Instant Messaging. I try and call it "brainstorming" or "getting encouragement" but the honest truth is that I would rather chat than edit.

12. Yahoo Groups
This is another one of those things that has promotion opportunities as long as I stick to business. I'm a member of so many though that I tend to get distracted. That's perfect if I'm avoiding my edits.

13. Sex
I call it "research". LOL. Luckily for my editors, my hubby works out of town so all week long it's just me, my kids and the rabbit. On the weekends, though, this is a fabulous distraction. And REALLY fun too.

Just so you know, I still get my edits done. Really. I do. Why are you laughing?
